What
is equine sports massage?
Massage involves the manipulation of the horses' soft tissues (muscles,
tendons and ligaments) for the benefit of the animal.
Is
sports massage suitable for my horse?
Despite being called 'sports' massage, it isn't just for the competition
horse. Whilst it does benefit racehorses, showjumpers, eventers etc, I have
also used it to treat retired horses, brood mares, and all kinds of pleasure
horse.
How
can massage benefit my horse?
Massage has many possible benefits, it can:-
- Relax
a stressed or hyperactive horse.
- Reduce
filled legs.
- Boost
circulation, thus helping both stabled/box rest horses and those in
a competition environment.
- Improve
the condition of the coat.
- Reduce
muscle tension.
- Maintain
range of movement in box-rested horses.
- Boost
the healing process.
- Promote
even muscle development.
- Improve
stamina.
- Increase
stride length.
How
do I know if my horse needs massage?
Horses were not designed to carry weight, pull a carriage, be confined or
live to an old age. They adapt to the demands we place on them remarkably
well, but there is nearly always some resulting muscular damage. Most horses
will not show any sign of the damage but often there are symptoms, for example:-
- An
unexplained deterioration in performance.
- Uneven
shoe wear.
- Uneven
muscle development.
- Problems
with lateral work.
- Unexplained
resistance.
- Poor
jumping technique.
- Unwillingness
to stride out.
